We might crack up in the sun,
Or we’ll lose it in the shade...

Support: Young Fresh Fellows

Notes: Nice tight show. The vocals are really up front and at times sound almost like a soundboard - hard to determine. Good version of ‘I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man.’ Nice to see older tracks like ‘Otto’ and ‘Fuck School’ making and appearance. And for my money, one of the great underated Mats songs of all time ‘Go.’ Early performance of ‘Darlin’ One,’ and the performance of ‘Willpower’ is actually pretty cool. The lyrics to ‘Anarchy In The UK’ are pretty much butchered, but it’s the thought that counts...

Notes: Essential show. ‘Black Diamond’ smokes while ‘Johnny’s Gonna Die’ smolders. Probably one of the best bluesy versions of ‘Hear You Been To College.’

Recording: Fantastic audience. Sounds like a broadcast/soundboard.

Support: ‘The Rettmans’ and possibly ‘Mortal Micronauts’

Recording: Soundboard

Notes: Bob is late for the show, arriving during ‘I Will Dare.’ Someone yells “I want my money back,” to which Paul replies, “I don’t blame ya.” Interesting thing about this show, especially considering the era, not one cover song is played (“Black Diamond” doesn’t count since they made it their own). Early 5:30 pm show. - This show has often been listed as August 18 but I have never seen any verification for that date. There are at least two fliers that list it as the 17th.

Bootleg: The Late Bob Show (incomplete).

Support: Laughing Stock (previously know as REMs. Led by Jim Walsh who wrote “All Over But the Shouting” and “Waxed Up Hair and Painted Shoes”)

Notes: The Replacements were a substitute for Robyn Hitchcock who canceled.

Fan Notes: One humorous moment that I recall from that show occurred when some audience member called out, “Tommy’s got a boner!” (As you know, the actual song title is ‘Gary’s Got A Boner’ from their album ‘Let It Be’.) Paul heard the shout, gave us a “He does?” look, and walked over to Tommy Stinson. He moved Tommy’s bass away to get a better look. I couldn’t tell if Tommy had a boner or not and Paul didn’t say.

Recording: Soundboard? It’s been suggested this may be a radio broadcast, but I’ve seen no evidence of that.

Notes: Only Paul Westerberg solo show while a member of The Replacements. Listening to this performance allows you to really appreciate the skill of Westerberg’s songwriting. When a song like ‘Take Me Down To The Hospital’ can be stripped down to an acoustic number and still maintain it’s power and melody is an accomplishment. Paul was obviously nervous, saying things like “Christ how much time I got” and “This isn’t quite as bad as I nightmared it to be... of course I’m lying.”

Met Paul at the Troc in Phila in 94 and asked him about that night. He looked at me over the bridge of his glasses, in his pajama bottoms and responsed, “That is near Hartford right?” I said yes. He laughed. Took a big drag of his cigarette and said “nice to meet you man.” Then started his set ......30 minutes late.” - Bret A.
